Iolite is a silicate of magnesium and aluminum. The name comes from the Greek word 'ios' meaning violet (the color of the stone). The Vikings used Iolite as a compass to aid in finding the direction of the sun during overcast. 

It assists in the healing of the eyes, memory problems and sleep issues. It can encourage calm and resourcefulness in difficult situations.

Iolite is also referred to as the "Water Sapphire" for its ability to unlock visions and release creativity.
